Robotic cleaner versus Non-Robotic pool cleaner

These are the two main types of pool cleaners, which we will summarize in this guide.

The Robotic Pool Cleaner is the first.

In short the Robotic Pool Cleaner uses sensors. When they bump into an object (for example stairs or a wall) the machine will reverse its course with a small change of direction to cover the whole pool. These cleaners have timers to start and stop the cleaning automatically. That means that after the pool pumps have slowed in the night and the debris has drifted down to the bottom the robotic cleaner starts on his own and clears up that debris. Unlike the non-robotic cleaners, the robotic cleaner is often equipped with brushes to scrub the pool. The dirt is collected in filter bags. Often suction power is used to keep the cleaner on the floor. The robotic pool cleaner doesn’t need the pool pump to be able to do its job.
Disadvantage – advantages of the robotic cleaner

The Non-Robotic Pool Cleaner is other main type.

These is divided in two subtypes by method of operation: the pressure cleaner and the vacuum cleaner. Both need a pool pump to work.

  • The Non-Robotic Vacuum Pool Cleaner (or suction side driven cleaner)
The vacuum pool cleaner uses the pool pump for its operation, more specific it needs the suction power created by the pump. It uses this to move through the pool on the bottom and the walls. Dirt stays in a special basket. The vac is attached to the vacuum plate or through a dedicated vac line.
Disadvantage – advantages of the vacuum cleaner
  • And last but not least the Non-Robotic Pressure Pool Cleaner (pressure driven)
The pressure pool cleaner uses the water flow of the pool pump returning to the pool to clean. This flow forces the cleaner forward so it can direct water and dirt through a filter bag. Unfortunately this requires high amounts of water flow to keep working. This is why often the use of a dedicated booster pump is advised to provide additional water pressure. This makes the system it total more expensive but it does have its advantages.
